Can We Really "Have It All"?

Last week I had a client over I was doing some design work for. My house was a wreck and my kids were really wanting to be nosey and hang out and ask questions and talk incessantly to our unsuspecting guest. Poor girl. Anyway, I shooed them off to play in their rooms, that was my first mistake. The meeting took longer than we thought so periodically I just yelled back at them to make them think I knew what they were doing. They were quiet... too quiet, but I didn't want to know what they were doing while our guest was still there... so the scary silence went on. Finally when we were done I went back to see what the silence had produced... my 4 and 5 year old monkeys came bounding out with huge smiles a half gallon of OJ (they were drinking from) and chocolate all over their face and hands. Turns out they were making brownies. The price for my "peaceful" meeting was getting to take an hour and a half to clean coco powder, eggs, honey, milk and OJ out of the carpet of two rooms... and this my friends is the life of a work at home mom.

The number of moms making the choice to work form home growing daily. Gena and I are among these crazy brave women. There are days we love and days we lock ourselves in the bathroom praying our crack monkeys won't find us for 15 seconds while we return an email.

Gena and I, of course have Earth Monkeys and the blog but she also cuts hair and runs a home decor business. I homeschool, do some design work on the side and am running a growing ministry along with a second blog... Why the lists?? Because there's a reason for our crazy! For some reason baring the title of a WORK AT HOME MOM doesn't compute to some who don't consider child rearing or anything else done at home a "real job".  There are definitely perks to this job... I never have to put on a bra or even brush my teeth to earn a little extra cash for our family... I get to be with my kids more (not sure if that's a perk some days:):)) and my schedule is relatively flexible. BUT, even with all of this I have to say the challenges faced on a daily basis can be over whelming!! Sometimes I look at other women who seem to have it all together and think how in the heck do they do it all???

Here's what I've learned through this whole process. Although we want it all... and society tells us we deserve it all. It's just not realistic to think that can be the case... gasp, snort growl... did she just say we can't have it all?? Ummm, yep I did. The truth is we can't ... we can have days of really productive work but those are the days are kids get less of us and our houses are messier... there are days we can give our all to our kids and let's face it NOTHING else gets done on those days... there are days the house is clean and meals are prepared instead of poured from a cereal box... but to have a day or days in a row of all of these things happening simultaneously means something behind the scenes has to give... be it our sanity, sleep or sex with our husbands... I just don't believe we can have it all everyday. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think allowing myself to be OK with NOT having it all brings more freedom and less guilt, it breeds laughter and lightness over the suffocating pressure of having to bare more than I am designed for. So today, whether you're a WAHM, SAHM or FULL TIME working mom... give your self a break... know that you don't have to pretend to have it all... or even want it all... and realize it's ok to be content with what we are and the limitations to what we can do.

And now I must go see why my wonder boys are beating the crap out of the metal cupboard in the dining room! Happy Friday, here's to not having it all and being happy with the life we've been given!

New To The Blog?
Just in case you're new around here I thought I'd introduce myself.... I'm the scattered crazy Earth Monkey Mom Lindsay:) And these are my wonder boys. My Hubbs and I have been married for 12 years and crazy has become our love language. My kids never have clean faces, my house is usually a mess and I always have 3-15 loads of unfolded laundry sitting on my couch. My family received anExtreme Home Makeover about a year ago and it's crazier than ever here! I post once a week here on EMM and also over on my person blog: The Fearless Experiment. We're glad you're here and we hope you'll stick around! More than anything we want you to know that none of us have it all together... and wether your kids are 40 or 4 you're not alone in your journey through motherhood!
