Show off your photos with a little twist. {with Maria Alexandra Photography}

I love many traditional things, although I always find myself needing a little change;
Like moving my kids furniture around, changing the decor in the living room, giving my furniture a new look by calling the fabulous Mindy Jones from pretty in paint ...
 Little changes make me feel ...fresh and entertained :)

{Video tutorial} 5 easy steps to do a boys "clipper" haircut...really, anyone can do it!!!

Maybe you do your families haircuts already, maybe you want to and just aren't brave enough yet, maybe you just experienced "one last hack job and now your going to do it yourself!"...Whatever the reason may be, it's a great thing to know how to do a really good "boys" haircut!  Just a quick warning {don't get too good unless want to cut your husbands hair, the neighbor boys and your kid's friends..word will spread!}
The Youtube video is just
over 10 minutes and gives you
{5 simple steps to a great clipper cut}
A couple of disclaimers...
1) some boys hair is easier to cut than others.  If your little guy is young (under 3??) and has thin hair, I would personally think twice on doing a clipper cut on him.  He may not like the clippers and it is hard to get thin hair to look nice that short.  But you know your boy and his hair so go for it if you are brave ;)
2) Don't expect perfection.  It takes practice... I wouldn't put too much time into every haircut or your little man is going to get bored and dread the next one!
3)  If you are an experienced hairdresser, please note that this video is very abbreviated so that it is easier to understand.  I am fully aware that there are tons of "technical" details I left out...on purpose.  No judging! ;)

If you find this video helpful, please share it  from Youtube.  A lot of time went into it (including my hunky man and his rocking editing skills! ) and I would love it if lots of people got some good help out of it!
Please let me know in the comments below if there are any other haircut {video tutorials} that you might be interested in!  I would love to try to help out...although I will not try to teach you how to cut your own hair as I have been banned from doing that myself ;)
Nuff said....Enjoy!!!!   {GENA}

hope in heart ache {It is well with my soul}

Photos by Visualize Photography

"When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul."
-Horatio G. Spafford, 1873

One of my husband's favorite lines is "waiting is the hardest part of hope", on monday we went into the doctor thinking we were going to hear the heart beat of our fourth child for the first time. 15 minutes into the appointment our hopes were dashed once again as we saw what looked like empty black pockets on the ultrasound screen. I was in shock... I had already started showing... my boobs hurt, I was moody and tired... how could there NOT be a baby in there?? I could feel the dam of emotions ready to break... I was heart broken and pissed off. I had just gone through this in November with miscarriage number three... and now it was happening again.

The loss of her dog+ tons of devoured chocolate=a parenting revelation...with author Shauna Schoeber!

     I’ve experienced something almost profound
over the last two weeks....
My husband and I had to make the decision to put our dog of 14 years, Indiana, to sleep. He was hurting and had horrible dementia, didn’t know who we were, was blind and almost deaf, hard a hard time moving and was seriously going insane. As a pet owner I know that we did right by our dog, but as Indiana’s “mom” well, my heart is still breaking. It’s not just my heart though, we are all going through a mourning process, well everyone except my two year old, who continuously announces to that world with joy that “Indi died!”

    Of course along with the stress of a huge change in our household everything seems to go to hell...
Dave leaves to go on a trip he had planned for months,
 the girls and I get sick,
there are projects to be done, homework to be completed…
a book to be written…minor details!
And through all of this my other dog, Tess, has been an absolute nightmare!  The garbage in the bathroom- which was never of interest to her in the past- is now her new favorite plaything. The cabinet that the garbage is in in the kitchen has interesting new scratches on it. I came home to find the remnants of five LARGE heart shaped boxes of chocolates totally devoured! Not just the chocolate, but the plastic, the cardboard, the foam…everything,

11 things you can do to show your kids how much you love them for free! (no hot glue or paint involved!)

Do my kids know I love them?  They should right???
I mean, I buy them groceries, clean and clothe them and take them to the park sometimes.  But do I really take time to get into their little world and show them?????
Do I slow down, get on their level and pour into them???
 I want my kids to know without a doubt that they are so adored there are not even words!
So here are a few things we all can do that are FREE!
...take very little time and require no crafting skills!  YES!!!

~Smile at them.  It reassures them and gives them confidence.  Seams simple...but do a little check today and notice how many times you smile at them ;)

~Get down on their level.  Really, bend down so they can see into your eyes and then listen to them.

~say "YES"...when they ask you to play, when they want pop tarts for lunch, (that one makes me cringe ;) ) when they want "just one more minute of snuggling"!

~Give them your full attention.  Put down your phone, turn off your computer, ditch the T.V. and just be with them.  Listen to them without interruption...I never want to hear my daughter say to me again, "your phone is more important than me"!  Yup, she has said that.  ouch

~this one I got from watching my mom wipe my little mans face...Be gentle with them.  Her gentle touch was a sweet thing to watch, and a far cry from the rough wrestling match that our face cleanings evoke.  I was inspired!!!

~Let them take as long of a bath as they want to.  Bath time should be a time of fun, relaxation and laughs. Let them enjoy it.

~Teach them something...a word in Spanish, a Karate move (my hubbie does this) some sign language...anything to connect with them.

~Dance.  Go crazy.  Like the neighbors can't see you through your windows.  I dare you.

~do something THEY love...find bugs, dig in the sandbox, play with play dough, or race cars.  I have to admit that I don't love a lot the of activities that my kids like do,  but when I do them with them...that says love to them for sure!!!

~Check your tone.  I have decided to listen to who in our house sounds like the  child and who sounds like the adult...I am embarrassed to admit that I (more often that I want to admit) sound like a bratty 3 year old, and heaven knows we only need one of those around here!!  So I am slowing down, listening to myself and taking a deep breath before I talk.  That doesn't mean that the child in me doesn't rear its ugly head sometimes, but hey, I'm learning!

~Say "I adore you!   I love you!   I am proud of you"!
This may seam obvious, but for real our kids can never hear this too much!

What can you add to the list???  How do you show your kids love???  Comment below and remember to share us with you r friends ;)!!
{GENA}...bye now, I'm going to go love on my babies! ;)

{faith gets out of the boat} - Ann Voskamp

I was reading A Holy Experience the other day (Ann Voskamp's Blog) and like it does so many days it punched me in the guts... She was talking about going outside of our comfort zones... and it spoke to me... she said:
“When God moves us out of our comfort zone —- into places that are way bigger than us, places that are difficult, hard, painful —- that even hurt — this is a gift.We are being given a gift.These hard places give us the gift of intimately knowing God — in ways that would never be possible in our
comfort zones.”
I have been living in my comfort zone for way too long... while we all have season's of needing to be in survival mode... I think I've been in one for going on 5 years and it's time to be done... it's time to move on... it's time to pull up my big girl panties and be who I was created to be.

We just can't get enough LOVE around here! Today YOU share about what love is to you! Oh this is some serious sappy!!! ;)

Love...can we ever get enough???  I doubt there will ever be a day when I ask my husband to stop saying "I love you" (although I did ask him to send Toms shoes instead of flowers ;) )  and seriously, is there anything better than my kids saying "your the best mommy in the whole world"!!! (Lets not mention that that is usually followed by "your so mean" seconds later!!!)
 With so much love out there, and so many ways to express it...we asked you to give us your best love schtuff!  So here we go, straight from a few of our readers (aka, you)
....LOVE BABY!

How do you say "Thank You" to the woman who gave your child life???...a letter to our children's birth moms...Gena

     Have you ever wondered how you would thank someone that donated
precious blood that saved your life?
Would there be enough gratitude to pour out to a heart donors family
if you were the one that received it because of their loss?
Is it possible to sufficiently thank another woman who gave your child her very life??

often find myself  in a place of total inadequacy  in trying to find the words for my children's birth mothers to thank them enough. (and I think my daughters birth mom would wish I would stop trying ;) )

Speaking the Language of Love...

              Photo by Visualize Photography

Ahhh love... such a simple word... so many ways to show it and screw it up. Have you ever thought about how you receive it or how you give it? I remember skimming Gary Chapman's 5 Love Languages book about 12 years ago when I was getting ready to get married. But as a self absorbed 20 year old bride to be I have to admit, I really just skipped forward to the quiz to find out what my love language was... I think back then it was shoes:) Anyway, a few weeks ago Gena told me about an online quiz you can take at their website to find out your love language... I went home and took it...and made asked my husband to take it too. I was sure after 12 years I knew what his was... but his top two were the ones I would have put at the bottom of the list... yikes, not getting the WOTY (wife of the year) award this year. 12 years together and I was just realizing I have not been communicating my love for him in the way he most wants to receive it... It was eye opening to say the least.

Living "all in" with Beth Coker...A single mothers journey that will inspire us all!

The Summit . . . I’m almost there. My strength is waning, but I think I have the stamina to reach the top. My journey is almost complete - I will have time to sit, relax, take in the view and look back upon all I’ve accomplished. It has been a long arduous climb at times, but the end is near.
 Just a few more steps . . .

The Power of Being Grateful...

It's so easy to get caught up in the day to day... work, family, friends, cooking, butt wiping, meltdowns, house cleaning... in the mundane it's hard to see how amazingly blessed our lives really are sometimes. Sometimes something as simple as scrolling through pictures on my phone can remind me how incredibly grateful I am for the crazy imperfect life God has given me... I dare you to make a list of the things you're grateful for today and see how it changes your day!

Top 7 Things I'm grateful For...

top 5 pearls of wisdom from the monkey of all grandmas {aka Earth Monkeys own super cool grandma!}

Lindsay brought out an oldie but goodie last week about unsolicited advice.
This in turn brought out the advice monster in her mother. I am after all the Queen of 'Do as I say not as I did', for this blog site anyway. So to quote an old bumper sticker: Get in, sit down, shut up and hold on as I am about to sum it all up, put it in the proverbial nut shell if you will. That's right ladies, mamas and the occasional daddy blog reader, here it is...

"The top 5 Pearls of Wisdom from the monkey of all grammas or is it the gramma of all monkeys?"

Let's just bring it all out and get it over with...side note: this is minus the infamous marriage advice edition, we'll save that for another blog on another day...
