A MOMS JOURNEY FROM RAGS TO RICHES… WELL, MAYBE NOT QUITE {Delores Rubino}
Back in the day (when I was married and mothering my small mob), we were living with some annoying, albeit character building, challenges. We lived in the land of “never quite enough” and I managed home life by becoming the Queen of Flexibility and Making-Do.
{ My kids still give me a hard time about diluting a half gallon of milk
with a half gallon of mixed dry milk and trying to sneak it by them.}
No matter what they say now, there were plenty of times when they really didn’t know the difference. We ate 16 bean soup and corn bread pretty frequently, and couldn’t afford air fresheners, so you can guess how that worked out. Pasta was on the menu weekly, whether it was served with homemade sauce or as macaroni and cheese with peas and tuna. I’m pretty sure I rationed everything from food portions to toilet paper, and everything in between.Simplicity was always the order of the day. .. except most days nothing was truly simple. In fact, everything seemed like a struggle for many years. When money is not available for simple things, everything becomes harder. And in that situation one learns to be flexible and creative while cultivating a sense of humor somehow, or one sinks into despair and hopelessness. I was born to be a silly, sassy, optimistic cheerleader and those personality traits saved me during the years of the great depression in my life. I really did live through the “Pit Of Despair” days and managed to emerge no worse for wear, ready for the next phase of my journey.
Although I am not financially wealthy, I have managed to accumulate an abundance of riches along this little walk on the planet. Some of my wealth is tangible: my wonderful children and grandchildren, my brother and sister and her family, my friends, my career, my home, sufficient food, reliable transportation, and good health.
The balance of my treasure takes the form of lessons learned, nuggets of wisdom,
And some common sense approaches to life.I’d like to share some of my treasure with you...
· Learn to laugh in the midst of difficulty and heartache
· If you fall or get knocked down, get up again
· Focus on one problem at a time
· There’s always another way to look at a situation
· You can mix the milk and fool your kids
· Roll with the punches
· What doesn’t kill you makes your stronger
· It could always be worse
There truly are no guarantees in life except for taxes and death. So, do yourself a favor and grasp that. Life can be very tough, but so can you. And your wealth is not determined just by your bank account, but by the depth of character in your personal heart and soul account. That is a worthy legacy to leave here when its all said and done. Be blessed.
Delores... has been a single mom of 8 kids since 1998, when her marriage of 22 years ended. Since that time, she has completed a Masters in Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education and began working with Child Development Services in Medford, Oregon in September of 2000. Her message is one of optimism, hope, and tenacity. She tries to be easy on herself, and not take things too seriously, and so humor is the vehicle she rides every day through life.
